Why Is It Important To Contribute To Society?

Why Is It Important To Contribute To Society

The Buddha said, “Within your own mind, you already have what you need to succeed—the ability to put others ahead of yourself. This is called virtue, the wish-fulfilling jewel.”

Whatever our situation, we can use virtue to make our life meaningful, strong, and happy. In the Tibetan tradition, “virtue” doesn’t have a heavily moralistic or religious overtone. Rather, it comes from our determination to develop the wisdom to clearly see how the world works, and the compassion to always hold the welfare of others in mind. Expressing compassion is harder than we often imagine, because the sources of our love and compassion are sometimes hidden from us, and we may have no ready access to them. Fortunately there are several special techniques that the Buddhist “training of the mind” in compassion has developed to help us evoke our own hidden love, as mentioned in Chapter 12 (Compassion) in the Tibetan Book of Living and Dying.

According to the basic laws of cause and effect, we must engage in virtuous activity to bring about true success—spiritual and worldly. If we help others—even think of helping others—we will quickly and effortlessly become successful. Virtue creates stability in our life—happiness we can depend on.

Why Is Charity and Contribution Important?

Nichiren Daishonin writes of such a spirit when he says, “If one lights a fire for others, one will brighten one’s own way”

Dāna, or generosity or compassion is not a sense of sympathy, or a warming of the heart, but is a sustained and practical determination to alleviate suffering. The compassion of the Buddhist teachings is one of logic, in that the compassion taught makes the practice urgent and far reaching, as well as stable and grounded. This level of compassion is the primary power of karma, and can combat the selfish nature found in samsara. By taking on the suffering of others, one can increase wisdom and the source of enlightenment. Compassion protects from self-interest, and is the source for all healing.

Here are some of the benefits of charity and contribution to society:

1. Opening the path to a Hopeful Future

Ask yourself, “If I don’t take that first step now, a path forward will never open”; “If I travel the world now, planting the seeds of peace in the society I live, someday those seeds will bear fruit”; “If I open the way now, eventually others will proudly follow.”

2. The boundless benefit of making offerings

The benefit of making offerings to the Lotus Sutra is boundless. Through that benefit, we can triumph over any obstacles and devilish function. And nothing is stronger than a person whose life is instilled with this confidence.

3. Manifest great wisdom and longevity of life

A growing body of research suggests that good relationships lead to better health and longer life. Studies point to the conclusion that having friends who support us can lower blood pressure, help us develop stronger immune systems and even improve health-related behaviors such as diet and exercise.

4. Tax Burden

Well, practically speaking, you could reduce your tax burden here at the end of the year. If you are done with investments, your extra income could help shape someone’s future and you could take home 80G and 12A certificates which would help you save your returns.

5. Compassion and Contribution

For instance, Professor Helwig Schmidt-Glintzer of the University of Göttingen in Germany says: “The bodhisattva way of life offers a foundation for peace, in that it strives not only for personal salvation and perfection, but also seeks to connect with other living beings and help them do the same.” He also asserts that a revival of the bodhisattva spirit will lead to a renewal of mutual trust and empathy—crucial qualities without which this world would be unlivable.
