How to Help Society As A Student?

We always tend to do things for ourselves and help our friends & families in different situations. But here, we are just talking about people whom we know. How would you feel doing something in the larger picture? For the larger cause: our society? For even the country, maybe? Yeah! That feels good already. So we are here with a few suggestions on how you can contribute to society.

What? Is there a problem? …

Oh, Reader! Are you still a student?

But you know what people say, age is just a number. If you have the desire & drive to contribute, there is nothing much that can stop you. All you have to do is to decide & look for ways to contribute your bit. These suggestions given on the fact that you are a student and still can make a difference in how things happen around you.

How To Help Society As A Student?

A) Helping People Around You:

1. Help your people every day when you have the opportunity.

While it may not be glamorous, small gestures of kindness at a one-on-one level are a great way to be helpful in your community. When you have an opportunity to make a direct intervention and help another person in your community, do it with a smile.

  • For example, help elderly people with things related to UPI payment and online banking.
  • Help a homeless person financially, or buy them a meal and chat with them while they eat.
  • If you see someone struggling with a severe disease or an accident, go and help them.

2. Show empathy to your people and listen to what they have to say.

Our family, friends, and co-workers are members of society, and we can help by showing them emotional support. If you need to talk about a negative experience with somebody else, let them share their own experiences first.

  • If someone in your society recently lost a close one, say something like, “I’m so sorry for your loss. If you want to share your feeling, I’m happy to sit & listen”.
  • If a friend is going through a tough time, say, “The struggle you’re facing today is building the strength you need for the future. Let’s have a coffee”.

3. Volunteer at a community level to help others in society.

Volunteering is a great way to get along with your local community and help out people who are less fortunate than you. It will take a small amount of your time every month & make a big difference in the lives of people around you. Depending on your interests, you could:

  • Volunteer at a local food distribution bank and homeless shelter.
  • Volunteer at a local hospital to serve senior citizens in this difficult time of the pandemic.

4. Donate blood if you’d like to help people through a blood bank.

People who are severely injured or sick need blood transfusions, and you can help them out by donating some of your blood. Many local hospitals do semiannual blood drives, and local blood banks are always looking for new people to sign up and donate blood.

  • Search online where you can donate. Search by typing in something like “blood donation near me”.

5. Donate your books and clothes.

Donating books & clothes is another way of making a direct impact on the world around you. Your old/used articles can be of great use for others who need them. Several non-profit organisations accept the old/used things and distribute them to the needy.

B) Helping the Environment:

1. Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle goods whenever possible.

We all live in the same natural ecosystems, and protecting your local environment becomes an integral duty towards society.

Recycle plastics by helping poor people who collect plastic wastes and try to use less plastic in general. Make sure to throw recyclable materials in recycling bins rather than trash cans.

  • If your clothes are wearing out, mend them rather than trashing them. Or, donate the worn clothes to a local charity.
  • Avoid buying materials that aren’t biodegradable.

2. Plant a tree in your locality to help clean the air.

Planting a tree not only will enhance the beauty of your surroundings, but it will also make the environment a little healthier. You can buy saplings at a nearby plant nursery. Plant the tree in spring at the beginning of your local growing season.

  • To plant a tree in a public area, you will need to do the necessary paperwork with the permission of the authority.
  • You can also research to find what types of trees are suitable and native to your area.

C) Helping Society through local NGOs:

1. Help your local charity raise funds.

You, as a student, can successfully raise good funds for a charity. People will be happy to help you by contributing their part & would appreciate your efforts. When you donate to a local NGO, you’re using your money to help strengthen society and the people who live in it. It also sets a good example for people around you and is more inspired to do likewise.

  • You may organize events like a weekend celebration and birthday party where you may ask guests to bring money-draft & items to donate to your charity instead of presents.
  • You can install a donation box in your society to bring a small change to the world around you.

As a student, you can become a member of the Sakal Relief Fund, and ultimately you can donate to SRF with the same goals as you.

Sakal Relief Fund is one the oldest NGOs rendering its help to different communities during natural disasters.
