Relief Efforts continue for families in Chiplun

Relief Efforts continue for families in Chiplun

The damage monsoons inflict on homes, schools, slum areas are beyond control. The livelihood gets affected, the houses get buried in wet mud, and the flood ends up taking so many people along with it. Families and children die every year due to heavy rainfall in low line areas.  Flooding disables sanitation facilities and contaminates water supplies, increasing the risk of so many diseases. Children are most likely to suffer from malnutrition, and can also leave children orphaned, displaced and without a childhood. Why does this happen? Every year many rural areas end up suffering from so many difficulties. It happens due to poor sewage systems and poor drainage facilities.

Just like every year, this year was also disastrous for the Konkan region. With constant heavy rainfall and wind, many have died and drowned. Chiplun, a region in Maharashtra has faced a massive loss of houses and people. Chiplun is a small town of fewer than 200,000 people. It is said that the 2021 floods in the coastal and Konkan belt were 10 times worse and deadlier than other years. Chiplun is located at the foothills of the Sahyadri mountain range in the Konkan region, with two sides of the town surrounded by Vashishthi and Shiv rivers. The Arabian Sea is very near to this town and so are some dams. Hence, this little town gets affected from all sides, which makes it very difficult to survive the monsoon.
